Dancer, singer, and musician Nic Gareiss partners with The Robin Theatre to present a solo hourlong feast of music and movement centering winter, solstice, and Yule. Wintersong combines traditional tunes and step dance from Ireland, Canada, and Appalachia with seasonal songs and ballads. This performance will be streamed live from the Robin stage and into your living rooms, offering an evening of sound and gesture to kindle warmth during the shortest days of the year.
Named by Dance Magazine as one of 2019's "25 to Watch," dancer and musician Nic Gareiss has been hailed by the New York Times for his "dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance" and called "the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald.
A child of the folk revival, Gareiss grew up being dragged to folk festivals (against his will at the time!) in the Midwest. At these events Nic learned Appalachian, Irish, English and Canadian step dance surrounded by fiddlers, banjo-players, balladeers and folksingers. This mix of traditional music, song, and movement from rural places has become the heart of Nic's creative work as a performer. Nic has earned numerous accolades including a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for traditional singer of the year and the Michigan Heritage Award, the state's highest distinction bestowed on traditional artists. He has performed in sixteen countries with many of the luminaries of traditional music and dance at London's Barbican Centre, the Irish National Concert Hall, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Kennedy Center. Always jubilant, often puckishly queer, Nic Gareiss has emerged as one of the most beloved young masters of traditional dance and music.
